Twin Birch Dairy, LLC, Keeps Things Moving With Patz Conveyors

twin birch-1Brothers Dirk and Ken Young operate Twin Birch Dairy, LLC in Skaneateles, New York. They care for over 2,000 dairy cattle on the 2,500 acre farm.

Twin Birch Dairy, LLC has always made efforts to be good stewards of the environment. The dairy, which was awarded the Conservation Farm of the Year Award by the Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District in 2002, keeps abreast of all farm-related environmental issues. While manure management is always an issue, it can be especially troublesome for operations with very large cattle herds. Twin Birch Dairy, LLC has invested in an anaerobic digester to turn their manure into useful energy and cow bedding.

After the digester extracts methane gas and kills the pathogens in cow manure, the manure is separated into solid and liquid waste. The liquid manure is pumped into a storage tank until it is needed for field application. Multiple Patz conveyors transport the solids to the loading bays, where a moveable plow empties the solids into the appropriate loading bay. Twin Birch Dairy can then use the dry, pathogen-free product for cow bedding or sell excess material to landscapers.

The Youngs enjoy the simplicity and convenience of the Patz conveyors and appreciate the rugged dependability. “The Patz conveyors move 66 yards of dried material through the barn every day, all year long,” stated Dirk, “The optional direct drive package with gear reduction works great. We also like that they are low maintenance. We’re very happy with the Patz conveyors.”
