Less Waste, Better Milk Components

Baroun Century Farm in Reedsville, Wisconsin, has been in Jason Baroun’s family for 130 years. Jason raises 90 youngstock on the farm and milks 50 own cows in a rented facility.

Jason’s heifer ration includes one 650 pound round bale of soybean straw, one 650 pound round bale of hay and 700 pounds of corn silage. Since Jason was experiencing a lot of wasted feed, he spoke to his nutritionist who recommended he try a vertical mixer. He approached his local Patz dealer for a solution, and purchased a 350 cubic foot Patz 800 Series Vertical Mixer. The mixer has virtually eliminated waste! Jason has seen a 15-20% decrease in waste from his bagged feed, and a 30% decrease in round bale waste.

In addition to less waste, Jason has noticed an improvement in the health of his herd, which has led to better milk quality. Milk production increased 10 pounds per cow and components have really jumped. According to Jason, protein went from 2.8 to 3.1 and fat from 3.7 to 4.1 – that is a 10% increase on both!

“I like the excellent uniform mix and complete cleanout,” Jason concluded, “I also like the low horsepower requirement and the side discharge. It’s simple and efficient.”
